Pela Patria
The Portuguese community in Shanghai in the 1937-1941 published two magazines, Portuguese Bulletin (1937-?) and Pela Patria (1940-41).
We only have pages from the February 1937 edition of Portuguese Bulletin, in English; it is uncertain whether there were later editions.
Pela Patria was published monthly in 1940-41; about half of the articles are in Portuguese, the rest in English.
These publications provide valuable insight into life in that city, before and after occupation by the Japanese in 1937, and contain many articles and photos of Macanese. The community there, feeling under threat and obviously economically stressed and insecure, tried hard to maintain their Portuguese identity and cohesion with articles on Portuguese history and culture, through social events, and by promoting lessons on the Portuguese language. But it could not last: with the outbreak of World War II in the Pacific in December 1941 the whole community dispersed, never to reassemble.

A revista Pela Patria foi publicada mensalmente entre 1940 e 1941; cerca de metade dos artigos são em português e os restantes em inglês.
Estas publicações oferecem uma visão valiosa da vida naquela cidade, antes e depois da ocupação japonesa em 1937, e contêm muitos artigos e fotos de macaenses. A comunidade local, sentindo-se ameaçada e obviamente em situação de vulnerabilidade económica, esforçou-se por manter a sua identidade e coesão portuguesas através de artigos sobre história e cultura portuguesas, eventos sociais e aulas de língua portuguesa. Mas tal não durou: com o início da Segunda Guerra Mundial no Pacífico, em dezembro de 1941, toda a comunidade se dispersou, para nunca mais se reunir.
