Japan

Portuguese established missions for some decades but then suffered harsh persecution eviction. Japanese Christians took refuge in Macau and contributed to the construction of S. Paulo Church, its famous landmark.
In World War II the Japanese captured Hong Kong but Portuguese Macau was neutral. Portuguese who had fought in the defence of Hong Kong were incarcerated in prisoner-of-war camps in Hong Kong and Japan.
