For four centuries the Portuguese settlement in Macau was an important missionary base and the centre of trade with China and Japan, a place that was vibrant, exciting and rich. Merchants and adventurers of many nations were drawn there, making Macau a melting-pot of cultures — based on Portuguese, but with contributions from the many countries with whom Portugal traded.
In early years, because of the rigours of travel, Portugal discouraged women from going to distant lands, so Portuguese men married local women and their children inherited cultures from both parents.
Thus, over time, the Portuguese in Macau developed their own unique customs, cuisine and dialect and proudly called themselves macaense (or Macanese in English).
Durante quatro séculos, o povoamento português em Macau foi uma importante base missionária e um centro de comércio com a China e o Japão, um lugar vibrante, excitante e rico. Comerciantes e aventureiros de muitas nações foram para lá atraídos, fazendo de Macau um caldeirão de culturas — com base na cultura portuguesa, mas com contributos dos muitos países com quem Portugal negociava.
Nos primeiros anos, devido às dificuldades das viagens, Portugal desencorajava as mulheres a irem para terras distantes, pelo que os homens portugueses casavam com mulheres locais e os seus filhos herdavam a cultura de ambos os pais.
Assim, com o passar do tempo, os portugueses em Macau desenvolveram os seus próprios costumes, culinária e dialecto únicos e auto-intitulavam-se orgulhosamente de macaenses.
