Dia de S. João

In the 17th Century, Macau was a rich and valuable Portuguese trading post. In late June 1622 a large Dutch force attacked Macau. A small group of defenders, augmented by volunteers, fought bravely and defeated the invaders on the 24th June, the feast of the birth of St John the Baptist. Ever since then, Macau has celebrated that great victory as the Dia de São João. In 2022, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of this victory, Mr Victor Marreiros produced this plaque. No século XVII, Macau era um rico e valioso entreposto comercial português. No final de junho de 1622, uma grande força holandesa atacou Macau. Um pequeno grupo de defensores, reforçado por voluntários, lutou bravamente e derrotou os invasores no dia 24 de junho, dia do nascimento de São João Batista. Desde então, Macau celebra essa grande vitória como o Dia de São João. Em 2022, para comemorar o 400º aniversário dessa vitória, o Sr. Victor Marreiros criou esta placa.
