Patuá verses and riddles

There were relatively few writings in the patuá (the dialect of Macau); many of these were poems or riddles. We reproduce here some of them. Here are two from José “Adé” dos Santos Ferreira.

Nunca-bom pegá picá	Não a peguem p'ra picar;	Do not hold it to prick;
Unga agula firugento,	Uma agulha ferrugenta,	A rusty needle,
Tánto dáno po causá.	Muitos danos pode causar.	Can cause much harm.

Bafo di ade sã bom	Falar muito é bom	A long winded talk is good
Pa quim têm vagar di más;	P'ra quem tenha tempo de sobra;	For one who has an abundance of time;
Más bom papiá pa onçôm,	O melhor é falar de si para si,	It would be better talking to oneself,
Pa onçôm sentí capaz.	E sentir-se inteligente.	To seem clever to oneself.

Cad'unga co su telado	Cada qual com o seu telhado	Everyone to his own roof,
Vôs pegá pedra atirá?	E atiras tu pedras?	And you throw stones?
Vôs quebra vidro di lado,	Quebras o vidro ao vizinho,	You break your neighbour's window,
Vôsso qu'lê môdo ficá?	E o teu como vai ficar?	And how will yours fare?

Dôdo co dôdo juntado,	Doido junto de doido,	Crazies getting together,
Tant' ancuza lô papiá	Muito haverá que falar;	They wil have much to talk about;
Quim lembrá chapá na lado,	Quem a eles se juntar,	Anyone who joins them,
Dôdo ficá ramatá.	Doido acabará por ficar.	Will end up mad as well.

Estunga vida, tem ora,	Esta vida há ocasiões,	There are times in this life
Sã vida di comediante,	É vida de comediante.	When life is a comedy.
Vôs nunca-bom ri, quelora	Não se ponha a rir quando	Do not break out in laughter
Gente ta churá na diante.	Na sua frente há quem chore.	When people are crying in front of you.

Fogám co fogo chapado,	Fogão com fogo aceso,	In a lit furnace,
Tud'ancuza lô quimá	Nada há que não queime;	There is nothing that does not burn;
Quim quere ficá quimado,	Quem quizer queimar-se,	Whoever would like to be burnt,
Sã fogo brincá.	É brincar com o fogo.	Plays with fire.

Gente capaz nancassá	Quem sabe não necessita	A wise man does not need
Onçom gab'rolá onçom;	De se gabar;	To boast about himself;
Mundo têm ôlo vôs p'olá,	O mundo tem olhos para ver,	The world has eyes to see,
Nádi chomá vôs gongôm.	Não o vai tomar por parvo.	And will not take him for a fool.

Hóme quelora aringuéro,	Homem quando intriguista	The man who is a schemer
Capaz fazê su manobra;	É hábil nos seus truques;	Is skilful in his wiles;
Su língu, assi grosséro,	Sua língua, tão grosseira,	His tongue, so rude,
Sã pió qui língu di cobra.	É pior que a de cobra.	Is worse than that of a snake.

Imitá buro-tapado,	Quem o ignorante imita,	Whoever imitates the ignorant,
Lôgo papiá babuzéra;	Tolices há-de dizer;	Will speak foolishness;
Vai trás di bésta-chapado,	Quem atrás do estúpido vai,	Whoever follows the stupid,
Sã lôgo fazê asnéra.	Há-de fazer asneriras.	Will make blunders.

Jambulám qui vôs panhá,	O jambulão que apanhou,	The jamun fruit that you can pluck
Sã fruta quelê maduro;	É fruta madura;	Is ripe;
Si vôs nom pôde panhá,	O que não conseque apanhar,	What you cannot pluck,
Nádi falá sã maduro.	É fruta que não está madura.	Is unripe.

Livro qui vôs imprestá,	Livro emprestado,	A book lent,
Sã livro disparecido.	É livro desaparecido.	Is a book missing.
Si cava lê, pegá dá,	Depois de o ler, o oferecer,	To return it after reading,
Nadi assi consumido.	Ficará menos arreliado.	Is less annoying.

Mai sã mai, somente unga,	Mãe sempre mãe, há só uma,	Mother is mother, the only one,
Nóiva têm pa iscolê.	Namoradas há à escolha,	Sweethearts can be be chosen.
Olá bem-fêto qualunga	Vejam bem qual delas	Look well to see which of them
Más tánto amô mer'cê.	Mais amor merece.	Is most worthy of love.

Nhónha tudo ora goelóna.	Mulher que fale sempre alto,	A shouting girl
Tudo gente lôgo mêdo	A todos mete medo;	Frightens everyone;
Sã ramendá aporóna,	Pois parece com a ordinária,	She seems like a vulgar woman,
Cartá pinga vendê brêdo.	Vendedeira de hortaliça.	Carrying suspended baskets of vegetables.

Ôlo qui nádi di diante,	Olhos que de frente,	Eyes that look straight ahead,
Astrevê olá pa nôs.	Se não atrevem a olhar-nos,	Not daring to look at us,
Sã ôlo quelê galánte,	São olhos esquisitos,	Are strange eyes,
Capas finzi, ferá nôs.	Fingidos, capazes de tramar.	Insincere, clever to trick us.

Papiá tánto nunca bom,	Falar de mais nunca é bom,	Blabbling too much is never good,
Gente cansado uví	A gente cansa-se de ouvir;	People get tired of hearing;
Pió sã papiá di onçôm	Falar de ti mesmo é pior,	Worse is speaking of yourself
Fazê gente olá vôs ri.	O mundo de ti se ri.	Which will make people laugh at you.

Quim co mentiroso andá,	Quem com mentiroso anda,	Whoever walks with a liar,
Sú vício lô prendê,	Seu vício aprende;	Will learn his vice;
Masquí verdade papiá,	Embora verdades diga,	Even if he then speaks the truth,
Gente sã trabalo crê.	Dificilmente o acreditam.	People will find it hard to believe him.

Raspiáti si sã querê	O pobretão que anda sempre	The pauper who always goes about
Tud'ora mostrá grandéza,	A mostra grandezas,	Showing off grandeur,
Sã têm qui onçôm gemê,	Acaba por se ver a sofrer,	Will end up suffering,

Qui onçôm têm tánto chiste;	Que tem muita graça;	He has much charm;

Tinta sã pôde tapá	Com a tinta s encobre	Paint can obscure

Vôs nom pôde sã pintá	O que você não conseque é pintar	What cannot be painted over
Nhu-nhum sua mau coraçám.	O mau coração dos homems.	Is the evil in men's hearts.

Malvadez lô têm na trás.	Atrás vai a malvadez.	Wickedness will follow.
Honra di gente pa cai,	P'ra cair a honra aldeia,	A person's reputation can fall
Unga istánti na-más.	Apenas um instante.	In no more than an instant.

Vélo qui imitá jóvi	Velho que imita os jovens	An old man who imitates the young
Sã têm-qui tomá cuidado;	Deve andar com cuidado;	Should take care;
Coraçám andá á-noví,	Anda á-nove o coração,	If his heart behaves like that of a youth
Vêlo lô ficá ferado.	Tramado fica o velho.	The old man will be duped.

Xáli qui vôs ta cubri,	O chaile que a cobre,	The shawl that covers you
Sã pa tirá frialdade;	Serve para a proteger do frio;	Protects you from the cold;
Ne-bom vôs pegá serví,	Não pense em servir-se dele,	Do not use it
Pa tapá vôsso maldade.	Para encobrir maldades.	To hide your evil.

Zum-zum qui cartá maldade,	O zum-zum que leva maldade,	Malicious gossip
Azinha pegá peçonha.	Depressa contagia peçonha.	Quickly infects with its poison.
Nhum qui ispalá nuvidade,	Homem que novas apregoa	A man who spreads such news
Sã más ramêde qui nhónha.	Bem pior é que as mulheres.	Is worse than women.

Virá ôlo, Natal passá!	In the blink of an eye, Christmas has gone!
Vida corê... corê... nádi pará.	Life runs on... and on ... nothing stops.
Olá Ano-Bom ta vêm,	I saw in the New Year,
Qui azinha passá tamêm.	How quickly that has passed as well.

Durmí unga sono erguí,	Asleep, I have a dream,
Ta comê "kua-chi", tomá "lai-si".	Eating kua-chi, receiving lai-si
Vai jugá perdê sapeca,	I gamble and lose money,
Vêm casa sentá cuçá careca.	I come home and scratch my bald head.

Cavá Ano-Novo-China,	The Chinese New Year has passed,
Intrudo ta dobrá esquina.	The Carnival parade has gone around the corner
Masqui nom têm bôbo pa olá,	Though we no longer see the clowns,
Lôgo uví bôbo papiá.	We can hear them talking.

Fichâ ôlo... intrá Quaresma,	I close my eyes, and Lent has begun,
Abri ôlo... já vai Quaresma.	Open my eyes, and Lent has ended.
Páscoa sã nádi tardá,	Easter is near,
Unga istánti lô chegá.	In an instant it will be here.

Virá cara, sã bolo batê-pau³,	I turn my face and it is time for moon-cake³
Grám Pri co su chachau lalau.	The Grand Prix with its chaos.
Natal já têm na traz di porta,	Christmas is just behind the door,
Pirú ta guní na horta.	The turkey is gobbling in the market-garden.

Dia intrá, dia sai,	Day begins, day ends,
Semana aguá, vem.vai.	Weeks fly by, they come and go.
Mês traz di mês azinha corê,	Month after month quickly pass,
Más unga ano ta disaparecê.	Another year has disappeared.

Quiánca ta virá ficá nhum,	A boy grows into a man,
Nina azinha têm su sium.	A girl quickly has her man.
Onte pegá boneca brincá,	Yesterday they played with dolls.
Hozi fêto mamá co papá.	Today they are mother and father.

Quelê-môdo nos nádi	How can we avoid
Virá ôlo intrá idade?	In a twinkling turning old?
Bulí cabéça, cai cabelo,	Our head fails, our hair falls out,
Bulí corpo, sintí qui vêlo...	Our body weakens, how old we feel...

Hóme co idade intrado,	A man who has entered old age
Nom-mestê ôlo galado.	Should not have a wandering eye.
Quelora vêlo, vida fêde,	When you get old, life is miserable,
Perdê juízo... qui ramêde! nbsp;	You lose your judgement ... what can you do!

Passado más quánto ano,	After some years,
Quim logo chomá êle mano?	Who will call him mano?
Vêlo, tom-tôm mom-tôm,	Old and clumsy,

Olá nhónha, cubiça,	You watch a girl longingly,
Corpo intero lô cuçá.	Your whole body will itch.
Cabeça rená maldade,	You think of doing something bad,
Oncôm isquecê idade.	When you cannot even remember your own age.

Amui sã qui robuçado,	The young Chinese girl is so [??alluring],
Vêlo sã ficá babado.	The old man is love-stricken.
Ficá pimpám, fazê chiste?	He becomes boastful, trying to be charming?
Sã fazê figura triste.	but becomes a pitiable figure.

Beldade si vira ri,	[??If the belle turns and laughs]
Vêlo lô querê erguí...	The old man wants to raise it ...
Erguí um-chinho, ta cai,	It rises slightly, then falls,

Tudo ancuza lô mostrá!	Everything will be exposed!

Nhónha ficá daretido,	The young girl swoons
Olá Tio assi cholido.	To see Uncle so [meddlesome].
Virtuosa ficá vantú,	[??The virtuous woman is [upset],
Olá Tio Cha-Chai sa...	To see Uncle Cha-Chai's ...
Nom-pôde falá.	I cannot say it,
Vôs pôde imaginá!	You can imagine it!

Agora ta tu-tum-piám,	Now he is a nincompoop,
Tio ramendá 'nga lampiám:	Uncle seems like a [lamp]

Mostrá carne naco-naco!	Showing flesh [??]!

Rósca-rósca na piscôco,	[?? Fleshy folds] on the neck,
Perna enténa qui grôsso.	Thighs so thick and fat.
Carne lápi-lápi olá,	Flesh is seen hanging,
Pám-di-casa lô tufá!	[??Sweet home-made bread will rise!]

Quim magro sã nuvidade.	It is unusual to find a thin person
Quelora, intrá idade.	in old age.
Rosto cumprido, chupado.	With a long face, [ [??sunken]].
Pêle di ade-salgado.	With the skin of a salted duck

Perna andâ gonchông, gonchông.	Legs a-quiver when walking,
Dôs fai-chi ta capi sôm.	Like two chopsticks picking up food.
Vánda diánti lô chapado,	From the front he is flat
Vánda traz... ropa istricado.	From behind ... like ironed clothes.

Cuza fazê ficá mau,	Why are do you do things to hurt,
Coraçám duro di pau?	Heart as hard as wood?
Quelora, ficá careca,	When you grow bald,
Vôs nunca bom chuchuméca.	Do not become a troublemaker.

Cadecê sã tem su vida.	Everyone has his own life.
Travéssa têm su subida.	The road has its slope.
Ta decê, ne-bom corê,	When descending, do not run,
Qui ramede falha pê.	How dreadful if you should miss your step.

Vêlo, tudo lô ficá,	Everyonje will grow old;
Quim azinha, quim vagá.	Some quickly, some slowly.
Nunca bom vêlo garido,	Do not be a flirtatious old man,
Olá nhónha... morê empido!	Looking at women ... you will die on your feet!
