Patuá verses and riddles
There were relatively few writings in the patuá (the dialect of Macau); many of these were poems or riddles. We reproduce here some of them. Here are two from José “Adé” dos Santos Ferreira.

Vêm casa sentá cuçá careca. | I come home and scratch my bald head. |
Cavá Ano-Novo-China, | The Chinese New Year has passed, |
Intrudo ta dobrá esquina. | The Carnival parade has gone around the corner |
Masqui nom têm bôbo pa olá, | Though we no longer see the clowns, |
Lôgo uví bôbo papiá. | We can hear them talking. |
Fichâ ôlo... intrá Quaresma, | I close my eyes, and Lent has begun, |
Abri ôlo... já vai Quaresma. | Open my eyes, and Lent has ended. |
Páscoa sã nádi tardá, | Easter is near, |
Unga istánti lô chegá. | In an instant it will be here. |
Virá cara, sã bolo batê-pau3, | I turn my face and it is time for moon-cake3 |
Grám Pri co su chachau lalau. | The Grand Prix with its chaos. |
Natal já têm na traz di porta, | Christmas is just behind the door, |
Pirú ta guní na horta. | The turkey is gobbling in the market-garden. |
Dia intrá, dia sai, | Day begins, day ends, |
Semana aguá, vem.vai. | Weeks fly by, they come and go. |
Mês traz di mês azinha corê, | Month after month quickly pass, |
Más unga ano ta disaparecê. | Another year has disappeared. |
Quiánca ta virá ficá nhum, | A boy grows into a man, |
Nina azinha têm su sium. | A girl quickly has her man. |
Onte pegá boneca brincá, | Yesterday they played with dolls. |
Hozi fêto mamá co papá. | Today they are mother and father. |
Quelê-môdo nos nádi | How can we avoid |
Virá ôlo intrá idade? | In a twinkling turning old? |
Bulí cabéça, cai cabelo, | Our head fails, our hair falls out, |
Bulí corpo, sintí qui vêlo... | Our body weakens, how old we feel... |
Hóme co idade intrado, | A man who has entered old age |
Nom-mestê ôlo galado. | Should not have a wandering eye. |
Quelora vêlo, vida fêde, | When you get old, life is miserable, |
Perdê juízo... qui ramêde! nbsp; | You lose your judgement ... what can you do! |
Passado más quánto ano, | After some years, |
Quim logo chomá êle mano? | Who will call him mano? |

Más certo sã ficá avô-côm. | Probably he is a grandfather. |

Olá nhónha, cubiça, | You watch a girl longingly, |
Corpo intero lô cuçá. | Your whole body will itch. |
Cabeça rená maldade, | You think of doing something bad, |
Oncôm isquecê idade. | When you cannot even remember your own age. |
Amui sã qui robuçado, | The young Chinese girl is so [??alluring], |
Vêlo sã ficá babado. | The old man is love-stricken. |
Ficá pimpám, fazê chiste? | He becomes boastful, trying to be charming? |
Sã fazê figura triste. | but becomes a pitiable figure. |
Beldade si vira ri, | [??If the belle turns and laughs] |
Vêlo lô querê erguí... | The old man wants to raise it ... |
Erguí um-chinho, ta cai, | It rises slightly, then falls, |
Nhónha virá costa vai. | The woman turns and leaves. |
Anôte sentá sunhá, | At night I sit and dream, |
Pramicedo lô cismá. | At dawn I will daydream. |
Têm vinho, nádi bebê, | I have wine, but won't drink, |
Têm frango, nádi comê. | I have a chicken, but won't eat. |
Tio Cha-Chai quelora jóvi, | Uncle Cha-Chai when young |
Nho-nhónha andá à-nóvi! | Would be on the go all day! |
Chistoso, arviro, brejéro, | A charming, fun-loving knave, |
ôlo co mám qui ligéro. | Nimble with eye and hand. |
Olá, nina bunitéza, | When he saw a pretty girl, |
Capaz mostrá ligeréza. | He would show off his agility. |

Cerola cai ramatá ... | Your underpants will fall as well ... |
Tudo ancuza lô mostrá! | Everything will be exposed! |
Nhónha ficá daretido, | The young girl swoons |
Olá Tio assi cholido. | To see Uncle so [meddlesome]. |
Virtuosa ficá vantú, | [??The virtuous woman is [upset], |
Olá Tio Cha-Chai sa... | To see Uncle Cha-Chai's ... |
Nom-pôde falá. | I cannot say it, |
Vôs pôde imaginá! | You can imagine it! |

Ramendá ampás sim sumo, | Resembling food scraps with no flavour, |

Quim inchido di gordura, | People swollen with fat, |
Nunca born mará cintura. | Should not use a belt. |
Rópa virá ficá saco, | Their clothes turn into sacks, |
Mostrá carne naco-naco! | Showing flesh [??]! |
Rósca-rósca na piscôco, | [?? Fleshy folds] on the neck, |
Perna enténa qui grôsso. | Thighs so thick and fat. |
Carne lápi-lápi olá, | Flesh is seen hanging, |
Pám-di-casa lô tufá! | [??Sweet home-made bread will rise!] |
Quim magro sã nuvidade. | It is unusual to find a thin person |
Quelora, intrá idade. | in old age. |
Rosto cumprido, chupado. | With a long face, [ [??sunken]]. |
Pêle di ade-salgado. | With the skin of a salted duck |
Perna andâ gonchông, gonchông. | Legs a-quiver when walking, |
Dôs fai-chi ta capi sôm. | Like two chopsticks picking up food. |
Vánda diánti lô chapado, | From the front he is flat |
Vánda traz... ropa istricado. | From behind ... like ironed clothes. |
Cuza fazê ficá mau, | Why are do you do things to hurt, |
Coraçám duro di pau? | Heart as hard as wood? |
Quelora, ficá careca, | When you grow bald, |
Vôs nunca bom chuchuméca. | Do not become a troublemaker. |
Cadecê sã tem su vida. | Everyone has his own life. |
Travéssa têm su subida. | The road has its slope. |
Ta decê, ne-bom corê, | When descending, do not run, |
Qui ramede falha pê. | How dreadful if you should miss your step. |
Vêlo, tudo lô ficá, | Everyonje will grow old; |
Quim azinha, quim vagá. | Some quickly, some slowly. |
Nunca bom vêlo garido, | Do not be a flirtatious old man, |
Olá nhónha... morê empido! | Looking at women ... you will die on your feet! |

Vingança sempre pidi
